Roman Toilet
In the modern day’s toilets, they
were designed to be a certain private area for people to feel comfortable to do
their utility. When it comes to a comparison, people in the ancient period such
as Roman, toilets were designed to be a relaxing place and socializing area. A
great example is a toilet in Ephesus; the toilet was built dated back 2000
years ago. The toilet had no wall and it was an open space which the toilet
seats were built from a long flatted stone and pinching many holes for people
to take a bladder in. Also, since people in the roman period wore long robes as
their outfits, therefore their outfits will covered every part of their body
and make them not to be embarrass to use the toilets. Moreover, the toilet in
the past did not separated for genders; men and women as same as today’s. That
might because of nowadays people care more about respecting to each other’s
privacy. The ruins of the toilet in Ephesus also show that the toilet in the
past were designed to be an entertainment space because there are some traces
of stream rooms, musical podiums and a fountains surrounding the toilet. This
can be assumed that people in the past used the toilet as a public gathering
place as well.
