Memorable
or Representative
In the world’s today, big buildings
in the cities seem to be very important for serving the increasing population.
Since the price is going higher, making the most profit out of the land is the
first to consider in terms of marketing strategy. Everything is about
money-making and business. Architectural development also has to adapt itself
into this. Architects cannot provide only the sense of aesthetic but they have
to design buildings that fit for the business.
Most buildings, of course, are
created to be memorable such as Elephant building located on Phahonyothing
road. The build is standing out with a massive shape of an elephant. It can be
assumed that Elephant building is one of the most memorable architecture in
Thailand once. However, in this generation, not so many people can identify its
build use. Is it a condominium, hotel, office building or so? It is a mixed use
building that has many functions in it so the building context itself cannot
identify its own building type well compare of one specific requirement such as
a shopping mall. For example, Siam Paragon shopping complex has one particular
purpose use—a commercial building. This specific business activity can be shown
by glass panel façade, persuading customer in step in. Huge entrances with
welcoming atmosphere are outstanding. Unfortunately, without surroundings
context, people can also misunderstanding with any others shopping malls.
Decisively, it has been to a
question that how a building can be not only memorable but also representative?
In my opinion, the balance between 2 things is an issue for new architects to
concern along with this commercial society’s condition.
