According to the film ‘Metropolis’ directed
by Fritz Lang in the year 1927, there are many unforeseen elements to consider
besides an enjoyment. As a silent film, the storyline focuses on a relationship
between humans and mechanical assets. As in the film, humans are roughly
divided into two separated classification in the society which is the working class
people and John Fredersen’s high society. The upper class people live on the
upper town surface which is called the ‘Metropolis’. It is filled with many
modern architecture constructions such as skyscrapers and
sky trains.
Focusing on the lower society, the
blue collars work very hard to live their daily life in factories with poor
infrastructure, public transportation and small simple accommodations.
Mechanical element has become a part of their lives and perspective of beauty.
With machines, geometrical forms and simplicity, these elements were the
symbolic of the poor during the period of time.
Questioningly, after modernism
movement, cubism, purism and minimalism the rich became more appreciate this
simplicity forms. This seems like kitsch in the bigger society. Metropolis
spread out. It becomes bigger and more stabilized. The rich and the poor cannot
be separated by the decoration element like previous time and they should not
be separated from now on.
